Ask a Coach

Ask a Coach

Q: How should I play on synthetic lanes?

A: Since synthetic lanes are harder than wood, balls tend to skid further down the lane, resulting in a much later ball reaction.

To compensate for synthetic lanes playing longer, shorter oil patterns generally are applied to that type of surface. On shorter oil patterns, the break point moves farther away from the pocket. Athletes move their feet and target inside on these conditions.

Usually the ball will overreact when it reaches the dry portion of the lane, making it difficult to get to the break point. Going up the boards will allow the ball to continue to skid as it comes out of the oil, adding the length needed to reach the break point.

Submit an Ask a Coach question to alyssa.klopatek@bowl.com. It may be featured in a future edition of the Gold Approach.

Welcome to the new Gold Approach e-newsletter

USBC Convention in Kansas City features Junior Gold qualifier

Convention

Make plans now to move and shake with top USBC decision-makers and volunteers at the annual USBC Convention, held in Kansas City, Mo., May 6-10. The 2008 USBC Convention features workshops, exhibits, voting sessions and social events for USBC adult and youth members.

Junior Gold members also can register for a Junior Gold qualifier tournament to be held on May 10 in conjunction with the convention. Bowlers who qualify to advance to the national 2008 Junior Gold Championships in Detroit will face off with more than 1,500 of the best youth bowlers in the nation.

Last year nearly 50 bowlers from as far away as Montana competed in the inaugural convention tournament in Nashville, Tenn., and eight advanced to the national Junior Gold Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. More are expected for this year’s convention qualifier – finalize your travel plans early and register now!

Go digital – get certified as a USBC Level I coach online

Coaching

Become a USBC certified coach without leaving your room! Kids ages 13 and up can now take the Level I coaching class online.

USBC Coaching created text and video for the course, which takes about three to five hours to complete. The course lets students go at their own pace, stopping and starting at any point. At the end of each section, students must pass a quiz before moving on.

Since on-lane instruction is impossible for an online course, student should practice the class drills on their own to develop a “coach’s eye.”

Create an account on bowl.com and register for the $60 online Level I course. After you pass the course, you can print out your completion certificate right away and are eligible to join the Coaches Association.

Seek out Sport Bowling opportunities

Sport Bowling

As a Junior Gold member, you automatically receive a free Sport Bowling membership upgrade. Sport Bowling leagues and tournaments are conducted on tougher lane conditions that force bowlers to rely on accuracy, spare shooting and consistency.

All qualifying events for the 2009 Junior Gold Championships will be required to comply with Sport Bowling conditions. You’ve got the Sport Bowling membership already – take advantage of it!

Preparation is the key to Sport Bowling success. Seek out Sport Bowling leagues and tournaments throughout the season to learn the differences in the way your game looks and feels on various lane conditions.

Athletes who succeed in Sport Bowling know they’ve got the skills to compete at very high levels. Know how to adjust quickly to changing lane conditions so you’re not surprised by your ball reaction when Sport Bowling. It could mean the difference between success and second place.
