Ladewig is widely recognized as the greatest woman bowler of all time. The Bowling Writers' Association of America voted her Bowler of the Year nine times from 1950-63 and in a 1973 poll she was named the greatest of all time. Among her most lauded achievements is a career total of eight U.S. Women's Open titles (then known as the All-Star), five of which she won consecutively. In 1965, she retired from competitive bowling after winning the World Invitational for a record fifth time.
