PBA50 Tour titlist Kerry Painter of Fairbanks, Alaska, took the opening-round lead at the inaugural International Training and Research Center Super Senior Classic on Wednesday.

Painter fired games of 236, 256, 289, 157, 246 and 203 at the ITRC for a six-game total of 1,387 (231.17 average). Willie Wells of Plano, Texas, finished the day in second place with 1,378, while two-time Professional Bowlers Association Tour titlist Pete McCordic of Katy, Texas, sits third with 1,362.

Painter has been doing some of the best bowling of his career. He captured his first PBA50 title in August and followed that with a victory at the High Roller Super Senior Masters on the way to being named the International Bowling Media Association Bowler of the Month for August.

“When I found out we were going to be on a longer pattern, I thought it was going to be fun,” Painter said. “I prefer to bowl on more oil than the other way around. I’m going to make a few tweaks to my equipment and go from there.”

All bowlers will return for an additional six games of qualifying Thursday at 11 a.m. EDT before the field is cut to the top eight for Friday’s cashers round. Four more games will be bowled to determine the five finalists for the stepladder finals, which will be broadcast live on BowlTV on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Super Senior Classic includes USBC members age 60 and above competing at the one-of-a-kind ITRC.
