Happy Holidays from USBC – Celebrate with Bowling!

Fun Holiday Fact:
1.5 million adult bowlers watched "A Scooby Doo Christmas"
last time it was shown on television. Maybe it was you!

Tip of the Month: Learning is a Continuous Process

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”

This quote from Pablo Picasso hits home for many of us when we grow comfortable with what we know, and then get frustrated when we struggle. Frustration often does not result from lower scores but from our lack of understanding about how to improve them.

Where can you find information that will help your game? Information on bowling is sometimes hidden unless you know where to look. Your first source can be to seek out a USBC certified coach in your area. Most coaches charge for their services, but a couple of lessons can pay off in higher position standings and more enjoyment of the sport. Plus lessons are likely to be a better investment than a new bowling ball.

Your local bowling center also may be offering a league or program designed to help improve your skills. If it doesn’t, let the center manager or proprietor know you’re interested. Pro shops also are a good source of information about bowling programs, camps and clinics in your area.

The coaching pages of bowl.com also archive each US e-Bowler tip and more on the tips page. The coaching forum is a good place to post questions and ask people to respond with ideas and suggestions.

Last but not least, numerous books and other instructional materials are available for purchase in the online USBC Store. These also may work well for some last-minute holiday gifts for bowlers on your list.

USBC's National Championships: A Bowling Experience Like No Other

One of the most valuable USBC membership benefits is the opportunity for members to compete in the organization’s national championships, which are two of the world’s largest sporting events.

The USBC Open and Women’s Championships are the highlight of the bowling season for thousands of USBC members. But what makes these events really special is that there is no qualifying required. The Open Championships are available to all adult members and the Women’s Championships are open to all adult female members, regardless of average.

As two of the biggest participatory sporting events in the world, members become part of bowling history just by competing. In addition to vying for national championships, each event offers multi-million-dollar prize funds!

The 2007 USBC Open Championships will be conducted in the one-of-a-kind 78-lane National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., Feb. 17 - June 30. The entry deadline has been extended and spots are still available.

The 2007 USBC Women’s Championships will make its first visit to Charlotte, N.C., April 12 - July 1. The entry deadline is quickly approaching and spots are still available.

The Open Championships has two average divisions — one for bowlers who average 181 and higher and another for bowlers who average 180 and below. The Women’s Championships has five average divisions (130 and under, 131-149, 150-169, 170-189 and 190 and over).

Similar to your local and state tournaments, each event features team, doubles, singles and all-events competition. The Women’s Championships also allows bowlers who don’t have a team to sign up to bowl on a Friendship Squad. You’ll be matched up with other bowlers from around the country who also want to compete in the world's largest participatory sporting event for women.

Visit USBCopen.com or USBCwomenschampionships.com for tournament news and entry information.

Did You Know? – Rules Explained

What is a turkey, in bowling terms?

Rule 3d of the 2005-06 USBC Playing Rules states that a turkey is three successive strikes. The count for the first strike is 30. To bowl the maximum score of 300, the player must bowl 12 strikes in succession.
