Welcome to the 2007-08 bowling season!

Thank you for joining millions of bowlers across the U.S. whose USBC membership supports research and credibility of our sport. Your USBC membership also provides you special benefits like this e-newsletter, the quarterly US Bowler magazine delivered directly to your home, the honor score recognition program, eligibility for USBC national tournaments and much more. We’re glad you decided to Bowl with US!

Tip of the month: Keep the first step short

A short first step in your approach will allow you to maintain good balance. Each successive step will be slightly longer to build momentum to the finish position.

In a four-step approach, your ball-side foot steps forward as your arm with the ball moves out in a rounded motion. In a five-step approach, your short first step is with your non-ball-side foot. Read the full tip with illustrations.

It’s not too soon – register now for the USBC Open Championships and Women’s Championships!

Each year, USBC members take part in the world’s two largest participatory sporting events – the USBC Open Championships and USBC Women’s Championships. More than 100,000 bowlers combined attend these events – will you be one of them?
It’s not too early to register for the 2008 Open Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., and the 2008 Women’s Championships in Detroit. Whether you’re a low-average bowler who travels with a group or a high-average lone ranger with your eye on the prize, the tournaments have divisions to suit your style.

When you’re not bowling, take time to see the sights of the tournament host city. Athletes traveling to Albuquerque have a unique opportunity to soar over the Sandia Mountains and Rio Grande River Valley with Rainbow Ryders, the official hot air balloon ride concession of the 2008 USBC Open Championships. Visit RainbowRyders.com or call (800) 725-2477 to book your ride. Use booking code “USBC08” for a special rate of $150 per person.

Sport Bowling brings bigger benefits

Sport Bowling members care about the credibility of the sport and play on competitive lane conditions that require them to rely heavily on accuracy and adjustment ability.

Sport Bowling is a true challenge for athletes. Members enjoy enhanced benefits such as PBA Experience leagues, money-saving coupons and inside tips from the pros. Even with all those valuable perks, annual Sport Bowling dues are only $15 for adults and $10 for youth.

More tips and techniques featured in new US Bowler

Be on the lookout for your latest issue of US Bowler in the mail in the coming weeks, featuring a new look, more tips and techniques to make you a better bowler as well as all the breaking news from the world of bowling.

The fall issue features an in-depth look at the life and career of USBC's newest spokesperson, Chris Paul of the NBA's New Orleans Hornets, and the latest on USBC tournaments and Team USA. Additionally, three of the greatest PBA bowlers share their secrets on making strikes, spares and converting splits.

Vote for Open Championships as ‘world’s best’

SportsTravel magazine has selected the 2007 USBC Open Championships in Reno, Nev., as one of the finalists for its “world's best amateur sporting event.” Cast your vote for bowling to help USBC win that honor. (Look for the Amateur Sporting Events category on the Best Single-Sport Event list.)

You may vote only once. Votes must be cast by September 15. You also can vote for your favorites in the other categories. Winners will be announced during the TEAMS 2007 Conference & Expo Oct. 23-27 in Louisville, Ky.

Roll with the pros on the Denny’s PBA Tour

The Professional Bowlers Association is now accepting entries for the 2007-08 Denny’s PBA Tour. Don’t miss your chance to bowl against the best! Here are just some of the reasons why:

  • Bowlers who qualify through the Tour Qualifying Round will earn the minimum 64th-place cash spot.
  • Standard event entries are only $300.
  • A minimum of four PBA members and one amateur each week will earn their way into the round of 64.
  • You don’t have to compete against exempt bowlers to earn money. Minimum cash is $300, with a one-in-four prize-fund ratio. Members and non-members compete for the same prize fund.
  • Competition breeds success. Hone your skills week in and week out in a demanding TQR against some of the best bowlers in the country.
