You can help build bowling, we'll show you how
You receive this newsletter because you are a member of the U.S. Bowling Congress, because you are someone who participates in the sport and because you are someone who cares about the future of this game that we love. We are asking you to pick up the torch and help us keep bowling going strong into the new century.
Bowling is moving into a new era where we need to work to grow the sport, an era where there are a lot of other options competing for people's free time and energy. USBC is dedicated to that goal, but our focus is on the national level, we need the support of members all over the country to build bowling on a local level.
You don't necessarily need to spend lots of money; in most cases we will give you everything you need at no cost. All we ask for is your time and dedication to this great sport.
USBC has prepared a fantastic guide to promoting bowling that will be going out to all association officials and proprietors. Those groups are already busy with their existing duties, and might not be able to find enough time to dedicate to all the aspects of bowling that can help build the sport. If you love bowling as much as we do, we ask that you step up to the task and volunteer to assist the local movement in one of these areas:
- In-school youth bowling
- High School bowling
- PBA Experience leagues
- Certified coaching
- National tournaments
- Bowl like the Pros
- Bowling charities
When you are ready to join the cause and donate your time and energy to bowling, these areas in particular can have a huge impact on our sport in the next 20 years. We will send you the free Marketing Kit that explains what you can do in a step by step guide. Call us at 1-800-514-BOWL ext. 3161 or email marketing@bowl.com.
You can be the difference in your community for the future of bowling.
Clash of Champions makes bowling history
In 1973 Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in three straight sets after he challenged her to a match where he boasted of his superior male attributes.
Sean Rash didn't challenge Lynda Barnes to a game at the USBC convention, she earned her spot in the championship of the Clash of Champions; but the result was the same. Lynda became the first female bowler to defeat her male counterpart in a televised matchup.
Both bowlers had shown their skill in the head-to-head sudden death eliminations on Saturday night, and then beat two other great bowlers to reach the finals. Sean, the USBC Masters winner, defeated USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships winner Tim Pfeifer and Lynda, the USBC Queens winner, took out 2007 U.S. Women's Open champion Liz Johnson.
In the style of a true great, Barnes finished the game with three strikes in the tenth frame to force Rash to throw two strikes and a nine to beat her. He was not able to, and Lynda took her place in history.
After the match Rash complemented Barnes by saying, "She is one of the best bowlers ever, male or female, not only did she bowl great against me, but she also bowled very well in the semifinals and in the shootout round as well."
