What are the oil patterns?
How challenging are they?

When you join a PBA Experience league, your goal will be to “tame the beasts.”

The beasts are the five lane oil patterns: Chameleon, Cheetah, Shark, Scorpion and Viper. These wild animals are the same patterns that Walter Ray Williams Jr., Chris Barnes, Pete Weber, Patrick Allen, Tommy Jones and other pros try to subdue each Sunday on ESPN in the 16 regular events of the Denny’s PBA Tour.

While PBA Experience lane conditions may be more challenging than standard leagues, taming these beasts is hardly an impossible task. That’s because USBC and the PBA will take you into the inner circle and discuss the trade secrets with you each week through league handouts, video from the pros and here on bowl.com.

“We're developing a video for each pattern that proprietors can show while bowlers are practicing,” said Director of USBC Sport Bowling Steve Wunderlich. “Prominent pros will talk about how they play that pattern, what equipment they use, and we'll have fliers to distribute for each pattern with a graph, a more detailed explanation of equipment and suggestions on how to play the patterns.

"There's nothing to be afraid of," Wunderlich continued. "These patterns aren't so difficult you'll never shoot a 200 game. You may find the scoring pace is lower than what you are be used to. It's going to be challenging, but certainly not impossible. It's going to do what Sport Bowling set out to do – provide a true test of ability."
