El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center
    El Paso, TX
Each spring, college bowling teams compete in regional qualifying tournaments known as “sectionals” for a chance to hoist the Kerm Helmer Cup at the renowned Intercollegiate Championships in May. The USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships (formerly the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships), first contested in 1975, is the pinnacle event of the college bowling season. The ITC brings together the top 16 men’s and top 16 women’s teams in the country to compete for national titles. For a school to participate in the ITC, it must compete in certified college tournaments and conferences throughout the season. By either winning a conference or being one of the top-ranked teams in the country, schools advance to postseason sectional qualifying events. The top four men’s teams and top four women’s teams from each sectional tournament earn berths into the ITC. Read More

ROCKFORD, Ill. - In a matchup of the two most storied men's programs in the history of the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships, Wichita State defeated Saginaw Valley State on Saturday to win the national title. The Shockers won their second consecutive title and ninth overall, defeating the Cardinals 2-1 in the best-of-three championship match at The Cherry Bowl. Wichita State claimed the deciding game 180-156 to earn the Kerm Helmer Cup and deny Saginaw Valley State its fifth championship. The title match will air on CBS College Sports on June 3 at 8 p.m. EDT. "This is such a great achievement, and I guess you could say our journey has paid off," Wichita State junior John Szczerbinski said. "We just try to put our hearts into every shot. We were not worried about making quality shots because all we can do is control our performance." Wichita State fell behind after losing the first game 212-185. Leading by one pin, Shockers anchor bowler Josh Blanchard had a chance to close out a victory for his team in the final frame, but left a 3-4-6-7 split. Lead-off bowler Will Barnes, the lone senior on Wichita State's team, turned things around the Shockers by striking to lead off the second game, propelling them to a 203-149 victory. "We didn't have much to lose after that first game, so we threw our shots and did what we were able to do," Barnes said. "I wanted to go out with a bang, so we did that but I couldn't have done it without the guys." The loss closed out a dominating tenure at the Intercollegiate Team Championships for Saginaw Valley State senior Dan MacLelland, who was honored with his third consecutive Most Valuable Player award. "It didn't go our way but I was glad to see that the two top teams in the country met for the title," said MacLelland, who led the Cardinals to the championship in 2007. "It's really emotional, but I just have to look forward. I will always be friends with these guys, and I'll probably be back here coaching next year." In the semifinals, the Wichita State men defeated Webber International twice Saturday to advance to the championship in the best-of-seven double-elimination format. The Shockers took the first match 4-1 and then advanced with a 4-2 victory. Saginaw Valley State swept Rochester Institute of Technology, 4-0, to make the final. Joining MacLelland on the men's All-Tournament Team was Wichita State's Josh Blanchard, Webber International's Marcelo Suartz, Rochester Institute of Technology's Dan Vick and North Dakota State's Eric Parvey. MacLelland also earned the Chris Stoehr Sportsmanship Award. The USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships featured the top 16 men's and top 16 women's college bowling teams in the country vying for national titles. All 32 teams competed in best-of-seven, double-elimination match play in the Baker format Friday, after which the field was pared down to four in both the men's and women's divisions. Read More

ROCKFORD, Ill. - From the first shot of the first game, the Wichita State women made it clear they would be tough to stop from winning their record ninth United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships title. The Shockers led each game from the get go as they swept Lindenwood to win the women's national title, 2-0, at The Cherry Bowl on Saturday. Wichita State took the opening game 218-180 and clinched the title with a 197-156 victory. The title match will air on CBS College Sports on June 2 at 8 p.m. EDT. "This year was amazing and we worked the whole year on staying in the moment, so we were just feeling really confident," Wichita State anchor Rocio Restrepo said. "It feels great, and now it's time to get some school work done and enjoy this victory." Wichita State started the first game with three consecutive strikes and never looked back. Lead-off bowler Melissa Hurst began the second game with a strike as well and the Shockers rolled to their third title in the past five years. Hurst and fellow senior Samantha Linder capped of their careers at Wichita State by each striking on three of their four shots in the championship. "We wanted to come out and be aggressive," Wichita State coach Mark Lewis said. "Melissa played the lead-off role and made great shots. Knowing it was the last shots of their college career, Melissa and Samantha stepped up and just stuffed the pocket and made great shots." Lindenwood attempted to make a comeback to win the first game after falling behind by 20 pins. Strikes in the seventh and eighth frames put the Lions in position to steal the first game, but Laura Fonnegra left a pocket 7-10 split in the ninth frame to put an end to the rally. In the semifinals, Lindenwood took down top seed Central Florida in consecutive matches, beating the Knights 4-2 and 4-3, in the best-of-seven double-elimination format. Wichita State defeated McKendree, 4-3, to advance. Central Florida senior Brigette Harrelson was named Most Valuable Player in the women's division. Joining Harrelson on the women's All-Tournament Team was McKendree's Rebekah Diers, Erie Community College's Gina Maduri and Wichita State's Restrepo and Sandra Gongora. Diers won the Chris Stoehr Sportsmanship Award. • Format The ITC now features an all-Baker system format, which consists of 32 Baker games to determine seeding into the two double-elimination brackets. Teams battle through Baker format matches with the winners of each bracket meeting in a best-of-three, winner-take-all championship match. The top three teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions all receive medals, but the ultimate prize is the Helmer Cup, which is awarded to the national champions. The award is named after the late Kerm Helmer, Erie Community College’s longtime coach who passed away in 2002.

FEATURED BOWLERS
  • North Dakota State Mixed Team Members: Zack Wilhelmi, Emily Peterson, Adam Laskey, Wes Stockwell, Eric Parvey, Devin Walter, Jake Tschida, Joe Matlock, Tim Rude
    Coach: John Laskey
Those who doubt that bowling is a sport may want to speak with Coach John Laskey’s North Dakota State Mixed Team. After spending much of the 2008-2009 season lost in the middle of the pack at tournaments throughout the country, the Bison seemed to be finally realizing their potential with a solid run at the Backhaul Hoosier Classic, but again found themselves in the middle of the pack after the anchor bowler suffered a sprained ankle. Nonetheless, the team awakened just in time to make an improbable appearance at the USBC Intercollegiate Championships this year and see their own Eric Parvey, who finished the 2007-2008 league season with a 227 average, make the All-Tournament Team. Coach Laskey credits the team’s superior conditioning for its ability to overcome the sort of injuries you expect to encounter in sports like basketball or hockey. “Each of the bowlers put in many extra hours, either conditioning or bowling practice—similar to what is required from athletes in other college sports,” Laskey says. With a season of obstacles behind them and a proven ability to overcome adversity, Laskey looks to the upcoming season as a chance to prove that this year’s ITC appearance was no fluke. “Now that the team has had the experience of attending the ITC, we are very motivated to show that it was not luck that got us there,” Laskey says. “We plan to work harder and continue the success we achieved this last year.”
  • Newman University Women’s Team Members: Desiree Lee, Linzey Roberts, Jessica Ganem, Christine Belsky, Cinthia Sauerland, Jasmine Ware
    Coaches: Bill Murphy, Bianca Montagnino-Simmons
Six consecutive appearances at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships and a 2008-2009 season that featured both a high finish for the team (2nd at the Rebel Classic) and yet another top ten ranking in the BWAA and NCBCA Polls may sound like the resume of a program with little left to prove, but Newman University Coach Bill Murphy, who attributes the team’s success to hard work and a willingness to listen, is already in pursuit of the next accolade. “They all knew that they were going to have to put a lot of hard work and effort into learning and growing faster in order to compete at the level they wanted, and for many of them they did,” Coach Murphy says. “If these girls continue to work hard and build up their confidence, they will truly be a team to look out for in the coming season.” Murphy’s unwillingness to be satisfied with prior achievements is clearly a reason why his team boasts two All Tournament Team members in Juniors Desiree Lee and Jessica Ganem. And with Linzey Roberts returning for three more seasons with Newman after finishing 5th in the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships as a Freshman earlier this year, Coach Murphy is unlikely to be disappointed in his hope for continued success. No one on the Newman Women’s Bowling Team is accustomed to looking back, but in 2010, they may be looking back at the competition they have left behind.
  • University of Houston Men’s Team Members: Mike Krupp, Gary Scrogin, and Mike Molitor – Bottom Row – Frank Papandrea, Claudio Saenz, and Philip Wong (not pictured Coby Lynch)
    Coaches: Bill Schwehr, Thomas Mohwinkel
In a sport known for philanthropic efforts that have become institutions over the years—such as the Bowling Foundation’s Bowl for the Cure program to help fight breast cancer—one charitable effort that has flown beneath the bowling radar is an endeavor by the University of Houston Men’s Team to become an agent of influence in their community. Coach Thomas Mohwinkel explains that at the University of Houston, bowlers are as occupied with the next tournament on their schedule as they are in serving food to the homeless during the Thanksgiving holidays, scorekeeping for local youth tournaments, and coordinating the Cougar Invitational Tournament for local youth and collegiate bowlers. But with one Academic All-American on their roster (Mike Molitor) and six of their top seven bowlers returning next year, the team is confident that a new campus bowling facility will help them build on recent 2nd-place finish in the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference. “This team really works well together and practices more than most teams of the past,” says Coach Mohwinkel. “This is a resourceful and dedicated group that is just now starting to see their potential.”
