RENO, Nev. -
For the second consecutive day at the 2018 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, there are new leaders atop the Sapphire Doubles standings.

The mother-daughter tandem of Barbara Woods and Katrice Woods of Dodge City, Kansas, took the lead Sunday at the National Bowling Stadium with a 1,088 total, surpassing previous leaders Jessica Christine Ting of Valinda, California, and Rachel Ruiz of Covina, California, who claimed the top spot Saturday with 1,061.TingRuiz2018WCForWeb250x140

Katrice Woods, who made her fourth tournament appearance and first since 2010, led the surge Sunday with a 567 series, while her mother, Barbara, a 13-time USBC Women's Championships participant, rolled a 521 set.

"All we can say is wow," Katrice Woods said. "It's a very special feeling to be on top with my mother at a national tournament."

The two usually bowl together at state tournaments, but the 2018 Women's Championships marked their first time together on the national stage.

"We bowl together at tournaments back home, but we rarely have success," said Barbara Woods, who is the defending Kansas state champion in singles and all-events. "I'm speechless, and doing this with my daughter makes it so special."

While they really enjoyed themselves on the lanes, taking the lead was far from their minds. They also used the trip to Reno as a family vacation.

"I know Katrice had a couple of nice games, and I bowled a little over average, but I really wasn't expecting to take the lead," Barbara said.

Sapphire Doubles consists of teams with combined entering averages of 290-319.
