Bower, Tomek capture doubles title in Ohio

PBA Central Region release

Darryl Bower of Middletown, Pa., and Jim Tomek Jr. teamed to defeat Dick Gran of Hartville, Ohio, and Bob Learn Jr. of Macomb, Mich., 2-1, in the title match of the Professional Bowlers Association Central Region's Legend Lanes Over/Under Doubles Classic at Legend Lanes on Sunday.

Teams in the event were required to include one bowler age 50 or older, and one bowler under the age of 50. The title was the first of the year in the PBA Central Region for Bower and Tomek. It was Bower's 16th career PBA Regional title and Tomek's eighth. They split a $4,000 first prize.

In the title match, Bower and Tomek won the first game, 422-400, before Gran and Learn came back to take Game 2, 512-456. Bower and Tomek won the final game, 501-461.

Bower and Tomek swept Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa., and Riga Kalfas of Florence, Ky., 2-0, and Gran and Learn blanked Don Genalo of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Jodi Woessner of Oregon, Ohio, 2-0, in the semifinals.

Gran and Learn Jr. earned $1,000 each for second place. Zaffino and Kalfas, and Genalo and Woessner each earned $800 as semifinal round losers.

The event drew 37 teams.
