Minnesota team takes Classified lead at 2024 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – There’s been a lot of movement taking place in the standings at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, and a new team has taken over the lead for the Classified Division.

The members of Hansen Hardscapes of Alexandria, Minnesota, now hold the top spot with a score of 2,607. The team started with 957 in Game 1 at the South Point Bowling Plaza and added 812 and 838 to set the new number by 150 pins.

Primetime #6 of Houston had held the lead since March 12 with 2,457.

Hansen Hardscapes consists of five friends – Ashley Ohlrogge (502 series), Jessica Cook (537), Lauren Johnson (436), Christopher Cook (527) and Eric Ohlrogge (605).

“We had a pretty good start,” said anchor Eric Ohlrogge.

The teammates agreed about starting out strong, and the first game helped them communicate as a team a little better Sunday at the Bowling Plaza.

This marked the 15th year of bowling the USBC Open Championships for Eric Ohlrogge, and 2024 was the fifth year of bowling for Ashley Ohlrogge. It was the first year for Johnson, Jessica Cook and Christopher Cook.

For Jessica Cook, she stated, “I bowled way over all my expectations all three games.”

With a goal to come out, have fun and bowl, Christopher Cook said, “I did not come in here with any expectations. I came for the experience, since it was my first year.”

Eric Ohlrogge, though, came this year with goals for himself, saying, “I came in with a personal goal of shooting 600, and I did that.”

Some teams come to bowl and don’t realize how well they’re bowling because they are focused on having fun and just enjoy being at the event.

Eric Ohlrogge knew the score before they started bowling, and when he realized that they were close to the leading total, he decided not to tell his teammates.

“We were just trying to stay calm and focused,” Johnson said.

For this team, they all agreed that if they were able to walk away with an Eagle at the end of the tournament, it would be something special.

“It feels pretty cool,” Christopher Cook said.

“That would be amazing,” Jessica Cook said. “We had a lot of supporters come today that were cheering for us, and they will be bowling later this week, so it would just feel really good.”

Classified Team features five-player groups with combined entering averages of 775 and below.

The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.
