Ohio bowler rolls perfect game at 2024 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – Sean Black of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, added his name to the list of bowlers to connect for a 300 game at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Monday, becoming the first to achieve the feat during team competition at the 2024 event.

The 29-year-old right-hander started his seventh appearance at the USBC Open Championships with 208, before settling in during Game 2 for 300. He finished the set with 177 for a 685 series.

Black’s 300 was the 12th overall at the South Point Bowling Plaza this year for the event, but the first 11 were rolled during doubles (four) or singles (seven).

The former collegiate bowler at Davenport University was able to trip a 4 pin on his 11th delivery of Game 2, but he came back with one of his best shots of the day on his final ball to put the finishing touch on his perfect performance.

He returned Tuesday to the Bowling Plaza and posted sets of 658 in doubles and 630 in singles to close with a 1,973 total.

Watch the video below to hear Black talk about the early nerves and how the trip 4 helped loosen him up for the final delivery, how he applied what he preaches as a volunteer high school baseball coach and stayed in the moment and looking ahead to future appearances at the Open Championships.

The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.
