HENDERSON, Nev. - Four years after winning two gold medals at the World Women's Championships in Las Vegas, Korea's Ryu Seo-Yeon won the women's singles title Tuesday at the 2013 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships.

Ryu defeated Chinese Taipei spinner Wang Ya-Ting in the gold-medal match, 224-182, at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center. Mariana Ayala of Puerto Rico and Huang Chiung-Yao of Chinese Taipei shared the bronze.

Korea Ryu 465 2In 2009, under the name Hwang Sun-Ok, Ryu helped lead Korea to the gold medal in doubles and team, while also earning the silver medal in Masters. The victory Tuesday brought back positive memories for Ryu.

"I have good memories of Las Vegas last time and that gives me good confidence," Ryu said through a translator. "When I get a gold medal, it helps and improves the health of Korean bowling."

In the title match, Ryu started off with an open before rallying with three straight strikes. The match was even when Wang tossed back-to-back open frames in the middle of the game. With a strike in the ninth frame for her second three-bagger, Ryu locked up the win.

In the semifinals, Ryu defeated another Chinese Taipei spinner, Huang, 202-200, while Wang knocked off Ayala, 205-190.

All 212 women in the field bowled six games of qualifying to determine the top four for the semifinals. Huang led the field by more than 20 pins per game with a six-game total of 1,460 but was unable to turn that into success in a semifinal win.

For the host country the United States, Missy Parkin was the high finisher in 23rd place with a six-game total of 1,212.

The action shifts to the men's doubles event Wednesday at the World Championships. All rounds of the World Championships are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.
